Regional train the trainers course for Radiation Protection Officers of medical and industrial facilities

From 21 to 25 May, 2018, in Hanoi, Vietnam Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety (VARANS) in collaboration with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) organized the Regional train the trainers course for Radiation Protection Officers (ROPs) of medical and industrial facilities. VARANS Deputy Director General Tran Bich Ngoc addressed the opening speech.

Participants in the course are from Kuwail, Nepal, Pakistan, Iraq, Bahrain, Lebanon, Palestine, Malaysia, China, Syrian Arab Republic, Marshall, Myanmar, Yemen, Jordan, Bangladesh, Thailand, Iran, Srilanka, Indonesia, Mongolia and Vietnam.

 

 

In the welcome remarks, DDG Tran Bich Ngoc said, radioactive sources are widely being used in various fields including in industry and medicine, in which the responsibilities will be assigned to the Radiation Protection Officers in a facility where the sources are used or stored. Being the nuclear regulatory body of Vietnam, VARANS well recognizes the importance of training in radiation safety management. She also expressed the hope that, this course will provide a great opportunity to provide create a forum for exchange of experiences and practices among participating countries.

 


Amparo Cristobal, Radiation Safety Specialist at the IAEA, who lead the course saild, the objective of this course is to provide nessecary knowledge and skills to trainers, from designing training programmes with IAEA guidance based on the IAEA safety standards and international criteria to using new teaching techniques. The train-the-trainers approach helps countries ensure that their radiation protection efforts are sustainable because it builds their capacity to train RPOs as needed.
 


 

5-days course included lectures of IAEA experts, exercises, group discussion as well as online activities, including a quiz on technical aspects and pre- and post-course tests./.
