The Briefing were attended by Ms. Barbarra Judge – the Honored President of the Atomic Energy Agency of the United Kingdom, Mr. Giles Lever –Ambassador of the United Kingdom in Vietnam together with about 25 international participants from nuclear agencies, organizations and companies of the United Kingdom, Japan, Chinaas the United Kingdom Trade and Investment Agency (UKTI), United Kingdom Atomic Energy Agency (UKAEA), World Nuclear Association (WNA), Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR), Itochu Company, M+W Group, Lloyds Register Organization, China Nuclear Power Institute, GE Hitachi, Westinghouse...

Delivering the Opening speech at the Briefing, Deputy Minister Trần Việt Thanh welcomed participants to the 2nd Briefing organized in Vietnam.The Deputy Minister emphasized Vietnam’s consistent policies on using atomic energy for peaceful purposes and ensuring the security and safety. Vietnam has participated in most of related international legal documents and been actively preparing necessary infrastructure for the construction and operation of nuclear power plants in Ninh Thuận. At the same time, the Deputy Minister also informed of key activities Vietnam has been carrying out to prepare for its first nuclear power plants.

Delivering a speech at the Briefing, Mr. Giles Lever, Ambassador of the United Kingdom in Vietnam said that in November 2013, Vietnam’s Ministry of Science and Technology and the State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland signed the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation for using Atomic Energy for peaceful purposes. The United Kingdom has been willing to provide experts, exchangedresearchers, conducted short training courses and advised Vietnam for the nuclear power development. The Ambassador highly appreciated the fact that Vietnam has paid attention to the development of atomic energy, however the development needs to be ensured with the establishment of security and safety measures from the beginning stage and monitor risks.

PhD Hoàng Anh Tuấn, Director of Vietnam Atomic Energy Agency(VAEA) had a presentation on the current status and prospective for the development of nuclear power in Vietnam. Over the past time, Vietnam has been received active and timely support from the International Atomic Energy(IAEA), organizations and nations which have experience in the nuclear power development in order to implement nuclear power programs in secure, safe and efficient manner.

Over the two-day duration, the Briefing was presented and discussed about reports of international and Vietnamese participants on the status, opportunities and challenges in the nuclear power development such as key issues in the nuclear power development; assurance of nuclear safety in the design, construction and operation; shared the United Kingdom’s experience innuclear power projects and proposed recommendations for Vietnam; challenges for the nuclear industry currently; options and approaches for financial issues of new nuclear energy projects.…

The Briefing is a good opportunity for responsible agencies relating to the nuclear power development in Vietnam to discuss, learn from international experience, contributing to preparing properly for the implementation of Ninh Thuận nuclear power project to ensure the security, safety and efficiency.
